An adjustable shawl designed to use your stash.

Description

This design came about as an attempt to tackle my ever growing stash of sock yarn scraps. I wanted something that used a lot of small amounts of yarn, and could be knit to any size. As the parent of a rainbow obsessed 5 year old, I happened to have a full spectrum rainbow of scraps, however this can also be made with just 1 or 2 contrast colors if desired.

Although this is knit flat, a circular needle is required for slipping stitches back and forth.

Materials

  • * Yarn MC: Koigu Premium Merino, 175 yards (5og), 3 skeins
  • * Yarn CC: Koigu Premium Merino, 175 yards (50g), total of 1 skein
  • Needles: U.S. Size 5 (3.75mm), circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Although this is knit flat, a circular needle is required for slipping stitches back and forth.
  • Other Materials: tapestry needle, blocking pins

Measurements

  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 30 rows = 4” (10cm) in garter stitch, after blocking
  • * Finished Size: 74” (188 cm) wide, 35” (89 cm) deep, after blocking.

* This shawl is designed to use up leftover scraps of yarn, and can be made to virtually any size. The contrast color stripes use a small amount of yarn, and can be worked in as many colors as you like. Regardless of finished size, the ratio of MC to total CC is roughly 3:1.

The large shawl shown used 525 yards (150g) of MC yarn, and a total of 175 yards (50g) CC. There are 18 CC stripes. The small pink shawl used 175 yards (50g) of MC yarn, and a total of 58 yards (16g) of CC, with 10 CC stripes.
